Iron in Cereal


  • Iron fortified cereal (those with labels "reduced iron" or "100% iron")
  • 3L beaker
  • Large white stirring bar and retriever
  • Stir plate


Put about 3 cups of cereal into beaker. Add water until cereal becomes soggy. Put in clean white stir bar and stir with magnetic stirrer for about 10-15 min. Remove stirring bar from beaker and note the slivers of iron covering magnet.


Note: Humans cannot absorb metallic iron. However, metallic iron reacts with HCl in stomach to produce Fe(II)
