Reaction of Sugar and Chlorate

Hazards

  • Do not grind or mix the sugar and potassium chlorate.
  • Potassium chlorate is a strong oxidizer.
  • Sulfuric acid is corrosive and toxic.

Chemicals and Solutions

  • 1g ground sucrose
  • 3g Potassium chlorate
  • Conc. HSO

Materials

  • One Crucible
  • One eyedropper

Procedure

  1. Place a mixture of 1 gm sucrose and 3 gms potassium chlorate in the crucible.
  2. Add one drop of sulfuric acid to the mixture. (The reaction starts immediately with smoke and it will then burst into purple white flames.)
