Honors Course Enrollment Information

Honors General Chemistry Enrollment
The Honors CHEM 145 Placement Exam is used for enrollment in CHEM 145.
Students can also place into CHEM 145 with an AP Chemistry score of 3 or greater, or a 6 or 7 on the High Level Chemistry IB exam.
Please note that the scores must be posted on your UW record in order to use the score for placement. If you are looking to enroll in the course before your score is on your UW record, you will need to take the placement test or send record of your AP scores to chemadv@uw.edu to be manually enrolled in the course.

Continuing the series
Once students are enrolled in CHEM 145, subsequent enrollment in CHEM 155 and 165 does not require any assistance from the advising office. Students simply need to meet the 2.2 grade requirement to move on to the next course.

Honors Organic Chemistry Enrollment
Chem 257 – Requires an average GPA of 3.3 or higher in Chem 142/152/162 or CHEM 143/153, or an average GPA of 3.0 or higher in Chem 145/155/165. Students should email chemadv@uw.edu on their registration date, and if they have met or are on track to meet this average they will be manually enrolled in the course.

Continuing the series
Once students are enrolled in CHEM 257, subsequent enrollment in CHEM 258, 259, 260 and 261 does not require any specific process apart from meeting the prerequisites.

AP credits and transfer course policies for Honors Organic Chemistry Enrollment
We do not accept AP general chemistry scores for Honors Organic Chemistry enrollment.
Partial AP and UW general chemistry courses to complete the general chemistry series are allowed, but there must be a grade in at least one of the UW chemistry courses. For example, a student that has AP credit for CHEM 142 and 152 and is taking CHEM 162 at UW would be able to use this combination, but the grade for CHEM 162 would need to be posted before the student is able to enroll in CHEM 257. In these situations we can use the 3.3 average, but recommend a 3.5 or higher.

Honors Biochemistry Enrollment
BIOC 450  - Requires an average GPA of 3.5 or higher in all Chemistry and Biology course prerequisites.
General Chemistry (Chem 142/152/162 or 143/153 or 145/155/165)
Organic Chemistry (CHEM 237/238/239 or 257/258/259)
Biology (BIOL 180/200)
A 2.0 or higher in MATH 124 but MATH is not factored into the average.

Students should email chemadv@uw.edu on their registration date, and if they have met or are on track to meet this average they will be manually enrolled in the course. During registration period 1, priority will be given to biochemistry majors. Registration periods can be referenced in the academic calendar.

Over-enrollment or joining the course without meeting the prerequisites.
BIOC450 enrollment is capped at 25. This course typically fills before all of the interested students that have the prerequisites are able to get into the course. Therefore, we do not waive eligibility requirements for the class. The biochemistry professors may provide a petition process a few weeks prior to AUT enrollment to consider students that do not meet the prerequisites and/or expand the course size slightly. Interested students should check this webpage to see if there will be a petition process and information about the petition process if it is available.

If there will be a petition process additional information (what the petition process looks like, the timeline, the likelihood of students petitioning successfully, or if the course will be expanded) will be provided on this webpage in August at the earliest. *We expect a petition process for AUT 26

BIOC 451
Requires the same as BIOC 450 and either completion or current enrollment in BIOC 440 and largely follows the process of BIOC 450. However, there is typically not a petition process.

BIOC 450 and 451 and BS Biochemistry degree requirements
Students that take BIOC 450 and 451 are still required to take BIOC 442 to complete the biochemistry series for the BS Biochemistry degree. The absence of an honors version of BIOC 442 does not mean that BIOC 450 and 451 cover the material or requirements.

Honors Physical Chemistry Enrollment
Prerequisite: either CHEM 153, 162, or 165;
MATH 126 or MATH 136;
PHYS 116 or PHYS 123
Students with a 3.3 average across the prerequisites (3.5 recommended) should email chemadv@uw.edu on their registration date, and if they have met or are on track to meet this average they will be manually enrolled in the course. Students that do not have a 3.3 in the prerequisites should contact the professor of the course for permission and forward the permission to chemadv@uw.edu for enrollment.
