Graduate students earn a Ph.D. through independent, original research in collaboration with one or more faculty members. Students choose coursework that ensures a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of their chosen fields, as well as a breadth of knowledge in the chemical sciences. Most graduate students enter the Ph.D. program after earning a bachelor's degree or its equivalent; a master's degree is not required for entry into the Ph.D. program. The median time from when students enter the program until they complete all requirements for the Ph.D. is about five years. Students are required to pass oral examinations in their area of specialization.
