Alum Profile: Alisha Jones, PhD

Submitted by Diana Knight on

The Biophysical Society featured Alisha "Jonesy" Jones, PhD '15 in their "Biophysicist in Profile" column in the November 2025 issue of BPS Bulletin.

The profile covers Jones's educational journey from high school through her graduate studies at the University of Washington Department of Chemistry where "she found her true calling in RNA structural biology," in the group of Professor Gabriele Varani.

Her postdoctoral work "reinforced her conviction that understanding RNA structure is fundamental to understanding cellular function" and now her lab at New York University "focuses on developing and applying methods to investigate how RNAs transition be tween different structured states."

Jones discusses the audacious thinking at the foundation of biophysics, unexpected sources of inspiration, 4 AM thoughts leading to the next breakthrough ... and how she still can't figure out how to manage her inbox.
