We are delighted to announce that Dr. Jiaojian (Tristan) Shi joined the University of Washington faculty as our newest assistant professor of chemistry on July 1, 2025!
Dr. Shi completed his undergraduate studies in physics at Peking University, where he investigated the chemical reaction dynamics of water and methanol on titanium oxide surfaces. After graduating in 2015, he pursued his Ph.D. in chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the mentorship of Professor Keith A. Nelson, studying strong-field phenomena in low-dimensional materials at terahertz frequencies. As a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, he worked with Professor Aaron Lindenberg studying terahertz–matter interactions using ultrafast, structure-sensitive spectroscopies with sensitivity down to the single-particle level.
At the University of Washington, Dr. Shi and his group will develop next-generation terahertz and mid-infrared light sources and use them to control physicochemical processes in functional quantum materials. Targeted applications include ultrafast data storage, quantum information science, and clean energy technologies.
Welcome, Assistant Professor Tristan Shi!
