Density Column of Coke and Diet Coke

Materials

  • Can of Coke
  • Can of Diet Coke
  • 4L beaker of water
  • Option: pan balance & two 500 mL grad. cyl.

Procedure

Place both cans in the beaker of water. The regular coke will sink to the bottom while the diet coke will float. (make sure that no air is trapped below the cans or they will both float). Regular coke is about 10% sugar by weight.

Option: The density of each solution can be determined by taking the weight and the volume.

Discussion

Actual densities: Coke – 1.042g/mL; Diet Coke – 0.997g/mL
