Alshakim Nelson promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure

Submitted by Kimberly Quigley on

The Department of Chemistry congratulates Assistant Professor Alshakim Nelson on his promotion to associate professor with tenure, effective September 16, 2020.

Research in the Nelson group is focused on the development of new stimuli-responsive materials and bio-hybrid materials for use in additive manufacturing (commonly referred to as 3-D printing). Beyond developing polymer materials with controlled macromolecular architecture and composition, the Nelson group is particularly interested in targeting new materials for potential life science applications. They have devised clever post-printing modifications to create networks that are able to immobilize living cells, an exciting breakthrough that paves the way for bioreactors capable of continuous production of high value chemicals. The Nelson group has also developed novel polymers that exhibit interesting stimuli-responsive behavior which may ultimately have applications in the emerging field of mechanochemistry.
