Introduction to electronic structure theory of solids from a chemical perspective, including band theory and the free electron model, with an emphasis on modern trends in research in inorganic materials in the bulk and on the nanometer scale. Prerequisite: CHEM 455 or CHEM 475; recommended: familiarity with particle in a box; free electron model; symmetry and symmetry elements; molecular orbital theory; principles of inorganic chemistry; and ability to independently research and learn advanced topics.
