Materials & Safety Gear

  • Lab Manual (Protocols, etc.) are available in Canvas in PDF format (no textbook to purchase)
  • Lab coat (knee-length)
  • Safety goggles (not safety glasses)
  • Lab notebook (does not need to have carbonless duplicate pages; a composition notebook is fine)
  • ChemDraw (Department of Chemistry license includes students; download information here)
  • Excel or similar graphing program (full Microsoft Office ProPlus version available free on UW-IT website - the desktop version has more functionality than the 365 apps)

Course Components & Grading System

The CHEM 317 Inorganic Laboratory course consists of:

  • One weekly lecture/discussion section (Tuesday mornings in BAG 154)
  • Two weekly 4-hour laboratory sessions in BAG 191 (See Schedules: AA/AB and BA/BB)
  • Seven Experiments with pre-lab Canvas quizzes and graded writing assignments
  • One Final Exam

Experimental exploration of the periodic table. Techniques of preparation and characterization of inorganic compounds. Prerequisite: either CHEM 165 or CHEM 312; and either CHEM 242, CHEM 262, or B CHEM 242. Offered: AWSp.
